Consumption methods for cannabis have blown up since the first states went recreational back in 2012. As 710 passes and we celebrate one method, it’s time to check out another consumption method that many overlook. Topicals refer to products that are used on the outside of the body such as creams, salves, patches, and bath products. They usually contain THC and/or CBD but the effects are, typically, just medicinal. Topicals are a vastly underestimated group of cannabis products, especially in the realm of pain and stress. Where most get relief from ingesting or consuming something, however, the idea of it not entering the body can make some scratch their heads. It’s not without reason.
Until recently, the market has been a bit neglected. Bud, edibles, and concentrates have had various companies take the quality and appeal to new heights; but, the topical category can be saturated by a small variety of products that don’t always smell or work the best, depending on your location.
So, where can you find a great topical that doesn’t smell like the dankest-of-dank mixed with Vicks, that also does what it advertises? To possibly answer our topical woes comes Hot Mess Kushmetics, a company self-described as “CBD topicals for the skincare snobs.” With a mission to save people from pain naturally and improve the quality of consumers skin, founder Heather Vanek, created HotMess. Addressing most of the concerns that plague the topical market, she formulated her CBD-infused brand claiming to be a “powerful healing without the buzz”. HotMesh Kushmetics notes that CBD products can be used as an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, to reduce and kill pain, improve circulation and regenerate cellular activity. The list of conditions that CBD can possibly relieve, however, goes much further.

As a self-described makeup and skincare-snob and consumer, I tried the Pineapple Express Bath Bomb. It boasts the ability to moisturize while it heals with CBD so, let’s see how it did.
We’ll be skipping the Taste Test as we aren’t eating and smoking this product. In the same realm, however, I can attest to the products amazing smell and aesthetically pleasing packaging. For any active skincare user, smells are important. Even as a cannabis topical user, smells are typically make-or-break factors in purchasing. Most use topical products to avoid the sensation of being high or because of the looming federally illegal status attached to cannabis. HotMess, fortunately, is all CBD-based and has no scent once so ever.
So for anyone wondering “am I going to smell like weed?”
The answer is a resounding, No!
The Pineapple Express Bath Bomb we reviewed had a surprisingly soft and sweet floral scent. The packaging is something straight out of a Sephora or Lush. It doesn’t have any cannabis connotation aside from the names only a few can point out. It’s one of the most discreet topicals as it blends on a counter full of products. It’s enough to stand out in a shop’s display, however.

Potency Test

Like I’ve mentioned in other reviews, I deal with chronic pain in my back. Most CBD-infused items I consume are in an effort to alleviate that or some level of stress. Initially, the bath relaxed me with the scent alone. After a few minutes, I started to feel a tingle in different areas but mainly, my back and shoulders. Despite what some, including myself, deem as a low amount of CBD, the bath bomb still helped relieve some pretty intense pain. Like some other CBD-based products, the effects of this one creep a bit. What starts as a calming bath ended as me sleeping like a rock with no recollection of actually going to sleep. The pain didn’t return until later the next day.
As I thought back on the rest of my night after the bath, I remember being cloudy and content. I can recall the moisturizing feeling after my bath as well. Typically, I need to moisturize right after to avoid any ashen color to my skin as it dries. After using the bath bomb, my skin felt significantly smoother and more moisturized than before.
In regards to pain, it helped pinpoint the area where my back pain comes from. I was informed that I seemed content as the pain that was normalized for me was relieved.

The Verdict

I loved the results I got from the bath bomb. I think I will opt for the body creams as a daily ritual and the bath bomb as an extra boost for days when I need it. Overall, I would highly recommend from anyone looking for a CBD-topical for chronic pain. It was fast-acting, effective, and not too pricey considering the effects. Your level of intensity with pain will determine which product is best for you. HotMess carries bath bombs, bubble bath, body butter and lotions to meet your topical needs. Always remember, however, cannabis affects everyone differently. See how topicals affect you individually before making high-dollar purchases. Luckily, HotMesh has a variety of options and price points to choose from available on their website.
