Open Weed Bar at Oregon Wedding is a Huge Hit

The Social Weed, Best source for all things Cannabis

Who among has not partaken of the long-standing tradition of sneaking weed into a wedding reception? Now, one couple in Oregon went out of their way to get all their guests stoned.

Newlyweds Whitney Alexander and John Elledge set up an open weed bar, or “cannabar” as the bride called it, in their wedding reception tent on a Christmas tree farm in Oregon.

“We were shocked by how much people loved it,” said John Elledge said. “I’m still getting a couple of texts a day from guests who enjoyed the weed tent.”

The couple had to choose between booze or pot as Oregon state law mandates that caterers with a liquor license cannot serve both alcohol and marijuana to guests. Events on private property are not an issue but caterers with liquor licenses come under Oregon’s strict Liquor Control Commission that does not allow for bartenders and budtenders to work out of the same venue.

“We made sure we were legal,” Elledge told Portland’s KGW.com

“We know the limit is 8 ounces so we had small amounts of 13 varieties with a budtender controlling consumption.”

The couple used a wedding planner from Lake Oswego’s Bridal Bliss, whose owner, Nora Sheils, happily went along with the program.

“This was our first request for a weed bar,” she said “We made sure everyone was safe and provided transportation. The couple provided the product and hired the budtender for the tent.”

Elledge, a professional pot grower, seemed pleased to be a pioneer of what will surely become a tradition.

“Even an 81-year-old woman who hadn’t smoked weed since the ’60s came into the tent at our wedding,” Elledge said. “Though skeptical at first she ended up loving it.”
